Digital Technologies Drive Supply Chain Innovation

Many supply chains are under increased stress today thanks in large part to digital disruption and ongoing globalization, which are raising customer expectations and stretching supply chains to the farthest reaches of the planet. In fact, customer demands for faster response times now represent the top challenge for many organizations’ supply chain operations, according to “The 2018 MHI Annual Industry Report,” which examines trends and next-generation technologies currently transforming supply chains.

Led by Deloitte Consulting LLP and MHI, the fifth annual study surveyed more than 1,100 manufacturing and supply chain leaders and found that 73 percent of them name customer demands as their most pressing challenge. Other obstacles include forecasting, synchronization, and omnichannel fulfilment. For many organizations, technologies such as robotics and the internet of things (IoT) are increasingly part of the solution.
